Frequently Asked Questions

What is person-centred counselling?

Person-centred counselling is a non-directive approach that places you at the heart of the process. It’s based on the belief that you are the expert in your own life. My role is to offer a supportive, non-judgemental space where you feel safe to explore your thoughts and feelings. Through empathy, acceptance, and genuine connection, counselling can help you make sense of what you’re experiencing and move toward greater self-understanding and change.

What issues can counselling help with?

Counselling can help with a wide range of issues, including:
- Anxiety and stress
- Depression and low mood
- Bereavement and loss
- Relationship difficulties
- Trauma
- Low self-esteem
- Work or study-related challenges
- Alcohol or drug-related concerns

If you’re unsure whether counselling is right for you, I’m happy to talk things through in an initial conversation.

Who do you work with?

I work with adults, children and young people (typically aged 12 and over), depending on individual needs. I have particular experience working with people in the education sector and with young people, including through my time at ChildLine.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no fixed number of sessions — counselling is a personal process, and the number of sessions varies depending on your needs and goals. Some people come for a few sessions to work through a specific issue; others choose longer-term support. We will review things regularly and go at your pace.

How long is each session, and how often do we meet?

Sessions last 50 minutes and usually take place weekly, though this can be flexible depending on your circumstances.

Where are you based?

I’m based in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, and offer in-person sessions locally. I also offer online counselling via a secure video platform for clients across the UK. Please note my counselling studio is on the first floor and does have stairs.

How much do sessions cost?

The fee for each 50 minute counselling session is £60. I offer a limited number of reduced-fee spaces depending on availability.

Is what I say confidential?

Yes. What you share in counselling is treated with strict confidentiality. There are some legal and ethical exceptions (such as concerns about serious harm or safeguarding), which I will explain clearly in our first session.

What happens in the first session?

The first session is an opportunity to get to know each other and explore what’s brought you to counselling. We’ll talk about what you’d like to work on, and you’ll have the chance to ask any questions. There’s no pressure to commit — it’s about seeing if we’re a good fit.
